Bandits of Batavia #1 from Beyondtopia Comics introduces a gritty, Indonesian-folklore-inspired world. Created by Bryan Valenza, with co-writing by Henry Barajas and art by Ario Murti, this comic plunges us into 1875 Batavia, where the masked vigilante Blackbull (aka Pitung) battles criminals.
The art is strong, showcasing the beauty of Batavia. However, the use of white lettering on black word balloons sometimes hinders readability. Ario Murti's visuals capture the essence of the setting, but the story itself feels somewhat disjointed.
The initial conflict between Blackbull and the Sumatran Tiger is intense, but the motivations behind their fight remain unclear. It's hard to discern who to root for, leaving the reader a bit lost.
While the comic teases a rich cast of characters, including the intriguing Ayesha from the fighting school, their personalities and backstories are underdeveloped. A deeper exploration of Indonesian folklore and cultural heritage is needed to truly immerse the reader in this unique world. The current glimpses feel too brief and superficial.
Pitung, the Blackbull, is presented as a blend of Batman and the Punisher, which is a compelling concept, but the execution needs more refinement. The additional information provided at the back of the book about Pitung's abilities is helpful, but should ideally be integrated more seamlessly into the main narrative.
Bandits of Batavia shows potential, but needs to better establish its characters, clarify its plot, and more effectively showcase the fascinating culture that inspires it.
